Roche product design for sustainability

How does a leading company pursue sustainability excellence? In 2019, for the eleventh consecutive year, Roche was ranked one of the most sustainable healthcare companies in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

Roche’s commitment to sustainability has always included product stewardship. In 2020 Roche amplified its commitment by establishing a big ambition: improve product stewardship performance by 50% in 10 years. ERM is honored that Roche included us in their work to pursue this ambition.

We worked in close partnership with the Roche team to articulate specific objectives for the program and co-create a Product Stewardship Performance (PSP) tool aligned with Roche’s business and environmental goals. Starting in 2020, Roche product development teams will use this tool to evaluate and improve product design and performance at each stage of the product life cycle. The tool encourages Roche teams to design products with fewer toxic substances, lower resource demand, and to support the recycling or reuse of medical and pharmaceutical device components and packaging, among other circular economy goals.
