Sustainability at the Virgin Money London Marathon

London Marathon Events (LME) organizes the Virgin Money London Marathon and other iconic mass-participation sporting events. ERM is proud to help LME achieve its objective "to inspire and deliver innovation in mass participation event sustainability."

LME engaged ERM to help develop an environmental management system (EMS) as a robust method for collecting data and tracking performance. The EMS ensures LME plans its activities in accordance with its environmental policy and other relevant standards and effectively manages its environmental impacts.

We helped create a detailed impacts register as part of the EMS, which captured the organization's environmental impacts and ranked them according to the significance of their impact. The impacts with the highest significance ratings, as well as impacts deemed most material to the organization, served as a starting point for measuring its environmental impacts. The impacts register also enabled LME to prioritize the actions it took in 2019 while the data capture and monitoring process was ongoing.

The data collection and monitoring process helps LME to track and measure its progress and make sure that the actions it takes are having the right impact. LME has begun incorporating data sharing within its contracting process with suppliers and partners.
