Breaking Barriers: Claiming a New Place on Earth

London, UK

“I was supposed to go to university in Kampala, but instead I came to London to be with my mum. I was 17. It was hard to leave my friends, my family and my life, but I was sure it was the right decision: gaining your mother is the best thing you can do in life. Also, in Africa, you have to hustle for everything, so I thought that life would be better in England.” – Prince, Uganda

Breaking Barriers presents an exhibition of portraits by Caroline Irby and interviews by Veronique Mistiaen recording the hopes and challenges faced by young refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

Through photographs and interviews, the exhibition will briefly describe the journey of young adults who arrived in the UK and show their experience in this country -the hurdles they are facing, especially around the asylum system, as well as their hopes for the future. By providing a safe space to share stories and portraits, we hope to build greater awareness, empathy and to encourage more people to reach out and support more refugees and asylum seekers. The exhibition is also to support the work of Breaking Barriers, a charity helping refugees to find meaningful employment.

Free admission.

Denise Delaney, a Director in our London office, supports Breaking Barriers with pro bono consultancy services and the exhibition is supported by IKEA and Mishcon de Reya.
